Introduction to The Kite Runner
This is an introductory post to the novel "The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini. This book was published by Anchor Canada in 2004 with the original copyright in 2003, and there are 394 pages of this novel.
"Amir is the son of a wealthy Kabul merchant, a member of the ruling caste of Pashtuns. Hassan, his servant and constant companion, is a Hazara, a despised and impoverished caste. Their uncommon bond is torn by Amir's choice to abandon his friend amidst the increasing ethnic, religious, and political tensions of the dying years of the Afghan monarchy, and apparently dissolved when Amir and his father flee to California to escape the Soviet invasion, leaving Hassan and his own gentle father to a terrible fate. But years later, an old family friend calls Amir from Pakistan and reminds him: 'There is a way to be good again.' And Amir journeys back to a distant world, to try to right past wrongs against the only true friend he ever had."
I chose to read this because it seemed like a fascinating story when I heard about it. I only remember parts of the film when I was younger, and it came out and I never actually read this novel. The story does remind me of "The Breadwinner" by Deborah Ellis which I had to read in Grade 6, and it had the same kind of war-torn setting in Afghanistan, and I liked that book, so I thought this might be just as good. This probably wouldn't have even been my first choice for a novel to read. However, this sounds interesting, and I haven't read a book in a long time. If good enough, I may even read more novels in the future.
